Ironically, after saying that one really needs to read this series from the beginning in my last review from this series, what’s the next book I grab to dive into?! Book 4! Really, Sarah, really?... Yes, OK, I did the big bad and completely did what I myself said not to do. But you know what? It actually wasn't as big an error as it could have been.I got a real feel for the characters and their relationships in this one, something that was sorely lacking in Book 9. The whole reason I grabbed this book, actually, was ‘cause I had heard it’s the “honeymoon” book between Colin and Emily, and I really wanted more of these two. And for the most part, I got it. I relished the real love connection between these two; it was a true treat to see Emily treasured for more than just her beauty and to see how much Colin really meant to Emily.
I also got some quality time in Emily’s head, seeing her confidence in her investigative skills, her insecurities with her own body and place in society, and fears from her past that impact her in the present. I actually really enjoyed exploring Emily in this book, getting to know her so to speak, even if several of my co-reviewers weren't that thrilled about it.
The world of late 19th century Constantinople and the world of the Ottoman court and harem life was also a treat. Tasha delivers again in her vivid descriptive passages and in her world-building. She transports her readers to this exotic and not often explored world with great skill. I especially treasured seeing how the inner politics of the harem were seen from the POV of an English lady and how different life in this part of world was different for women in general during this time period.
Now the mystery portion of the book? Not such a great feature in this volume. Don’t get me wrong. I was intrigued to find out the whodunit, and the eventual culprit was a surprise to me as I was reading along. But there were instances where I was very surprised at the ease in which Emily was given access to the harem itself. Some of the coincidences of evidence appearing like magic and some of the logic leaps were also eyebrow raising for me.
For me, the attractions and detraction for this volume versus book 9 were almost exact opposites. The time spent exploring the characters and their relationships were a treasure. Yet, the mystery portion was lackluster in areas and just downright audacious at times. I’m definitely glad I grabbed this book as it evens out the 9th volume very well. I got a feel for the characters even if the mystery part wasn't up to snuff. I’m going to be reading more of this series for sure; this volume just cemented my love for the characters and their relationships.

A Crimson Warning A Lady Emily Mystery Lady Emily Mysteries Tasha Alexander 8601410403393 Books Reviews
Someone is smearing red paint on the front steps of the homes of society's elite, then exposing the darkest secrets of their inhabitants. As if that's not shocking enough, as lives are ruined by scandal, suicide, murder, and kidnappings soon send ripples of fear through Victorian England's upper class.
"A Crimson Warning" by Tasha Alexander is another good read in Alexander's Lady Emily series. As Lady Emily and her dashing husband Colin Hargreaves investigate who is behind the attacks on their friends and acquaintances -- and wonder if they might be the next targets -- they still find time for romance and comforting cups of tea.
Alexander does a decent job of describing life among the high society during the area and of providing a mystery plot that is filled with suspicious and interesting characters, who make it difficult to guess who is behind the mayhem. Lady Emily, Colin Hargreaves, Emily's friend Ivy, and other characters hold the reader's attention. The tension is nicely revved up as families wait not only to see if they will be the next victims of the crimson paint but also when the villain will reveal their secrets.
Highly recommended for readers who like historical romantic suspense.
A very pleasant read!
I liked the first two Lady Emily books, even though Emily's choice of friends, travel destinations, and drink (among other things) seemed to strain credulity. Fatal Waltz was not as good, and I am currently stalled at just over half Tears of Pearl. Emily's love for her new husband and her honeymoon seems to be realistic but takes up too much of the story line. Her constant fear of pregnancy and the supposed prophecies of an old woman seem out of character for the strong-willed Emily. While Emily and Colin have always traveled, sending them to the Ottoman Empire seems to remove them further from their usual milieu, making them remote characters. The author tried to repair this problem by moving friends into the story, but this seemed to make the story even more incredible -- friends along on a honeymoon. Colin seems to be even more remote in this story, and it seems far-fetched for his usual intelligent self to overlook Emily's obvious symptoms.
I didn't really like the main characters or connect with them.
The 6th book in the Lady Emily series has Lady Emily and her husband Colin back in London. The season is coming up, and Emily is looking forward to becoming more involved with the organization working towards getting women the right to vote, much to her mother's horror. A death of a businessman in his warehouse starts a string of terrorism in the elite community. Society members are targeted by red paint on their doorsteps, followed by revelations of dark secrets. Complicating matters are a series of threatening notes to the businessman's former fiance. It is clear that someone believes that he has given her an important item. As Emily and Colin dig into the twin mysteries, they follow a curious trail of clues. Emily's friend Ivy is afraid that she may be targeted, but is initially too scared to confess to Emily her own dark secret. The two must figure out the culprit before scandal turns into murder. The mystery threw in a few red herrings to keep things interesting, and overall it was a good addition to the series, with some humor injected care of Emily's mother.
