A fast paced story with great characters, I loved the story and fell even more in love with the future possibilities. The main character, Vincent Graves, is a man who has returned from the dead to help solve murders caused by supernatural characters - the catch is that he takes over the body of the recently deceased victim to do so, and every time he does, he loses a little of himself. His handler, Church, gives him a time-limit to solve each case and very little other help. The only thing that Graves can bring with him from case to case is knowledge - in every other regard he has to start completely from scratch. It's like Quantum Leap meets Supernatural, but with a main character who has forgotten he's in it to help people, and starts off focused just on the case. Virdi maintains both the suspense of the case at hand, and the character's past and current transformation, making us feel both for the victim and the investigator. He excels at action scenes - I have rarely read books with such well-described yet fluid action scenes. I never had to re-reading to try to figure out what just happened.I bought this book months ago and started to read it, and got irritated at a errors and some issues with the story-telling. So when I saw there was an update I tried again. I have never been so impressed at the transformation of a book. R.R. Virdi is clearly an author dedicated to improving his craft, and since "Grave Beginnings" hints at a HUGE amount of story both behind and ahead of them, I can't wait for the next installment!

“You belong in an insane asylum, you know that?"
"Maybe my next case...”
― R.R. Virdi, Grave Beginnings
In my opinion this book should not be attempted without ample time to savor it. This fast paced novel centers around a "paranormal investigator" named Vincent Graves. Our sarcastic and at times world weary hero encounters a number of paranormal beasties during this first installment of The Grave Report. No matter if he is battling an elemental or harassing a gnome for information his endless sense of humor keeps you giggling, while wondering how the other paranormal beings don't rip his head from his shoulders out of spite. I can only imagine that his sardonic quips are a defense mechanism against deeper human emotion. Through this first journey he is able to find himself and be able to feel a deeper purpose again, along with (dare I say it) emotional feelings for someone other than himself *gasp*. R.R. Virdi has created a world and a hero that is my opinion can be as good (if not better) as Jim Butchers Dresden Files phenomena. Graves is likable and infuriatingly charming anti-hero that you can't wait to see what kind of situations he will be put into next. This book leaves you wanting to know more .
My questions
Who is Church really? and Who does he work for?
What is Vincents past and what did he do that caused him to become what he is now?
Will Vincent ever get laid? (You know a VERY important question)
Over all I highly recommend this book and can't wait to see what happens next.
I've read and loved the first few Dresden Files books as well as the show Quantum Leap, which a lot of people are comparing this series too, and I must admit that it kinda intimidated me to think about it because I wasn't quite certain how it would work out. Still, the concept and the blurb hooked me and so I finally sat down to read it.
Loved it! Monsters based on mythological lore, believable details about how supernatural entities live along-side humans and a kick-ass, smart-ass character who can't remember much about his life before his died, but helps solves the mystery of other people's deaths? Hell yes! Bring it on! I've placed the next book in my cart already to purchase (come on, payday!) and can't wait to find out what murder Graves will have to solve next. Great start to what I see being an awesome series.
I really enjoyed it when Graves woke back up with Church and he had died (basically failed round one with the monster). It was so different than most urban fantasy where the characters are overpowered and manage to beat the odds because of the amount of power they have. It was a nice change to see a more mundane(ish?) urban fantasy character who didn't have a bunch of fancy powers to save him. He had knowledge and sources for more knowledge, and while he had extensive healing abilities, and his borrowed body could withstand more than the average human, these were more survival traits than offensive traits.
A recent favorite of mine. Humorous, action packed, lots of supernatural beings, and full of fire. The mystery surrounding the main character makes for interesting tension, and doesn't slow down the pace of immediate action. Dialogue is engaging. There are a few scenes that I suspect will stick with me for a while. Recommended for people who enjoy stories involving fiery supernatural beings, paranormal detective work, mysterious antiheroes/heroes with dark shadowy pasts, male and female character teams, action and comedy mixed with more action. There is definite violence( supernatural) and language. Would rate 4.5 stars.
